Industrial Kitchen Bins

I am completely taken with these perforated tin kitchen bins (actually, many of these were originally perforated metal wire gym baskets). The shelves of perfectly organized metal bins looks both vintage and systematic. Plus the industrial look always suits a kitchen well. The well-stocked shelves are also a great alternative to the traditional hutch. Even the numbers on the shelves look chic. I wonder if I could convince my local hardware store or high school gym to sell me their actual shelves? Probably not.

Filing this under ‘items that must hang in my closet‘.  Ever since I spotted this perfect mini, worn by Ashley G, the uber fashionable Planet Blue stylist, I knew I wouldn’t stop daydreaming. This dress is utter perfection.  The Seneca Rising Daydreamer Dress has it all:  a plunging v-neck, sleeves (obsession), and the perfect shade of black (yes, there are shades of black – this one is a softer shade, and I love it!)

Military-Inspired Jackets

{image a la Atlantic-Pacific}

When I’m not babbling on about fashion, clothes, shoes, and other ground-breaking world events, I play a lawyer. I’m petite (whatever that awful word means), and my signature look is the dress, tights, and cardigan combo. Try as I might to venture, I stick with this ensemble.

But in a law office, clients pop by all.the.time., and I can’t risk looking like a seven year-old. So I’m working on adding structured jackets to the mix. I’m sticking with structured jackets for two very practical reasons: (1) petite implies that I am less than busty – the implication is entirely true – I melt away in big shouldered numbers – so fitted I go, and (2) structured is way more fashionable – I reserve boxy attorney jackets for only the most formal of federal court hearings (shaking in my conservative pumps.)

My latest jacket crush – the military-inspired blazer. Ever in style, military buttons and bold piping are right up my fashion alley.

Current Military-Inspired Jacket Obsessions:

Love Moschino Military Jacket, $595 $273

Ann Taylor Petite Military Jacket, $198

Juicy Couture Troupe Wool Jacket, $298 $199

Frenchi Ruffle Hem Military Jacket, $49 $23.90

Smythe Cadet Jacket; $695 (eek!)

Fun fact: The jacket that Bee, from Atlantic-Pacific, is wearing is in fact, Stella McCartney for GapKids!

Branch Chandeliers

I’m so stunned by these branch chandeliers.  They remind me of log cabins and New England winters. The white version is extra modern and sleek (you have to love the old-fashioned can of spray paint). I wonder if I could collect fallen branches and limbs and glue them to a modern-ish chandelier (a few great chandelier “base” options a la Wal-Mart here, here, and here).  I’m feeling a need to DIY (I love love love excuses to use my hot glue gun)!

White Home, Bright Accents

Filed under: Design

I am a sucker for clean lines, bright sheers, and white paint. Still, I flip through design catalogs and blog after blog, thinking, I can work with color, I can. But I rarely can. Its all black and white for me. Thus, when I found the set-up for Anne M. Cramer’s Spring 2011 collection {a la Design*Sponge; found via Adorn Inc.}, I was giddy with delight. White works. All I really needed was a bit of a color “cheat.” I can handle this.

The Kimono

Nicole Richie wears the satin kimono all over town – and she looks endlessly effortless (the satin feather-printed kimonos seen everywhere are in fact from her own line, House of Harlow 1960/Winter Kate, her version of the “bed jacket” – think velvet and lace – is also from the Winter Kate line).  Miley Cyrus rocked a floor-length version to the Never Say Never premiere and again out on the town.

Paired with jeans, kimonos look casual and stylish.  But part of me worries, are these satiny robes a tad on the costumey side?  Probably – but fashion is all about the drama.

I err on the side of fashion “safes”, so I probably won’t venture from the slight-flare-denim paired with a muted color kimono, but I can’t help but think that a tight mini worn with a sexy colorful satin robe is just the ticket.

My take on the trendy kimono:  wearing pajamas to work and still looking chic?  Yes, please.

Sweets On A Stick: Pie & Cake Pops

Lollipops are sooo last season. The hottest sweets at weddings and events –> cake pops (and my personal faves – pie pops … yes, pie pops).

Okay seriously, how does the pie stay on the stick? I can’t even keep pie on a fork. These bakers are clearly defying aerodynamics.

Meet Happy Tape, or Japanese Paper Tape, also known as The World’s Prettiest Duct Tape. (I am from the school of thought that duct tape fixes everything, and thus, this tape makes me very happy indeed.)

This Japanese masking tape comes in a whole host of beautiful colors and patterns. Made of Japanese washi paper, this fanciful tape is perfect for decorating packages, gift wrapping, scrapbooking, card making, fancy labels, the list goes on.

The Skinny On Skinny Jeans

Filed under: FASHION

The other day, Grace at Stripes and Sequins reminded me about those other jeans in my closet. You know, the not-skinnies. Somewhere around the 2000s, we all got caught up in the skinny jeans craze; blame Kate Moss. (Skinny Jeans actually fell into favor way before that … in the 1950s the likes of Roy Rogers, Marilyn Monroe, and every band member from The Beatles forward.) And then there were jeggings.

My take on the denim phenom, it’s all in the name. I wear skinny and therefore I THINK skinny.

But the teeny tiny jeans (spandex necessary in my book), are not necessarily the most flattering of denim. Sometimes they work, and paired with ballet flats – so chic. Sometimes they become a second skin – not so chic. But at times I yearn for the comfortable balance of a slight flare. I may not be ready to take the plunge into the high-waisted 70s wide-leg trouser, but it might be time to mix in a few of my old flare favorites.

Closet, here I come – I’m digging out my bootcuts.

Bon Voyage

{image a la Could I Have That}

Spring Break here I come.  I have nominated myself the recipient of a much-earned vacation.  I promise to try to blog as much as possible … because let’s face it, I never run out of things to babble on about.  I’m hoping to tan, practice my photography skills (editorial photos of feet and wrists, here I come!), eat, gym, eat again, and all-around-relax.

And while I’m on the subject of vaca [vay-cay? (sp)], I am the world’s worst packer.  I pace my closet – all two-and-a-half feet – and then stuff every single article of clothing into my luggage.  I have three pairs of boots in my suitcase right now … I’m going on a Caribbean cruise.  This may or may not be practical footwear.  I have two ballet flats.  Two sandals – flip flops don’t count as sandals.  Three pairs of heels and I am concerned this is entirely inadequate.  Okay no more listing – this list is making me feel like I should take out a pair of shoes, and I just don’t want to.  I like my shoes, and clutches, and dresses, and tights, and jeans, and stretch pants (when the vacation jeans get too tight), and cardigans, and, and, and.

Practical bloggers lay out perfect outfit combinations and photograph their choices for prosperity and kudos.

I give you Exhibit A (a la Lori’s Shoe Blog):

I’m tired already.  I laid on my luggage and got it closed.  I consider this packing success.  (Organization is overrated.)

Julianne Moore for Talbots

Apparently, Talbots has got it all figured out. After I picked my jaw up off the floor, I finished scrolling through the incredible Talbots lookbook featuring Ms. Julianne Moore. There is no doubt in anyone’s mind that the Hollywood A-lister is drop-dead beautiful, but Talbots is one step ahead of us – she makes everything she wears look good. Sadly, I always chocked Talbots’ wardrobe up to something middle-aged librarians wore.

Dearest Talbots – I was so wrong. I want it all.

I have cuff envy.  This copper Modern Sleek Armour Cuff (a la ASOS) makes my heart go boom.  And since I’m sharing a totally reasonably-priced forearm cuff, why not give your hearts something else to skip over (at a slightly [haha] higher price) … say hello to the House of Harlow 1960 Tribal Cuff.  A girl can dream.

Pretty Packaging

Filed under: All In The Details, DIY

My current gift-wrapping obsession – picture perfect DIY (do it yourself) packaging.  Always a fan of craft paper, colorful hand-cut details really spice up an already crafty looking gift. With a glue stick, fabric, even yarn – a package looks too perfect to tear open (not that that has ever ever stopped me.)

Fun trick – skip the pricier craft paper and wrap with brown paper grocery bags and newspaper.

Party Straws

{image a la Hooray Design; via emma+ella}

I live for straws.  I actually spend real money on straws.  (Note to reader:  I consider items over one (1) dollar to be real money.)  My hubby buys me gifts such as a pop-up straw dispenser – featured at a 50s-themed diner near you.  I cannot physically drink from a glass without a straw.  I dribble on myself and spoil pretty clothes.  I am the tacky girl who drinks from the red stirrers past midnight.  I have considered smuggling said red stirrers by the handful for future bar/club use.  The point is (I always get there!), these straws speak to me.  They say, “buy me” … “justify my love”.

When I was little, someone smart (though likely not the dentist because this adage probably holds no water – haha, best pun yet) told me that if you drink through a straw you avoid staining your teeth.  In one fell swoop both my straw and diet coke addiction were substantiated.  Straws produce healthy teeth and gums (picture Orbitz girl smiling into camera – cue ding sound).

Likelihood of health insurance covering decorative straws?

All Dressed In Tulle: The Ballerina Skirt (Grown-Up Tutus)

{Carrie Bradshaw in the opening credits of "Sex and the City." Image a la thefashionmagpie.com}

Ballerinas and princesses rock tulle skirts effortlessly. So does Carrie Bradshaw. But outside of center stage and HBO, can a grown up really wear a TUTU? Survey says, yes (… if worn well.)

Rule 1 – The tutu can be chic. The tutu and ribbon lace-up ballet flats – flop. You are not a ballerina, you are a fashionista … at least for today. One statement piece at a time. Particularly when playing dress-up.

Rule 2 – Pick a theme and stick with it. My favorite version of tulle is dressed down with black. Black boots, black tights, black tank. But Spring’s nudes, blushes, and neutrals look ethereal and dreamy with the right layering of tulle. Don’t add zebra. Don’t add sequins.

Rule 3 – Fashion is 4 parts style, 6 parts confidence. I won’t walk out of the house if I feel YUCK. I will put on red lipstick and then step outside. If tulle feels overwhelming, opt for a ruffled or layered lace skirt – go for volume and femininity (operation tutu = success).

Rule 4 – Never forget to twirl.
