I just wanted to send a quick thank you for all of the love and support! Never in a million years could I have imagined a life, a passion, and a potential career on it’s heels from the world of blogging – but I’ve found all of that and more, plus a lot of inspiring friends!  Thank you for loving and laughing along with me over at Glitter & Pearls, and thank you for helping to make Glitter Weddings a reality.  Both, still babies, I’m hoping for much bigger and better in 2012 {with glitter on top!}

Cheers to a lovely New Year’s Eve, and a wonderful New Year!

Friday Link Love

This Friday’s Link Love is mostly an ode to nerdy chic – because being geeky is totally awesome.  2012 = embracing my nerd.

It’s like Marc by Marc Jacobs climbed inside my brain, asked “what would lexi want”, and then spit out conservative-sweet flowy dresses and cardigans decked in sequins and fur.  This is love.  {Marc by Marc Jacobs: Cordosa Shimmer Dress, Hobbes Cardigan, Limelight Gold Leather Skirt, Wingtip Platform Leather BootiesViva Cable Sweater Dress; Accessories: Rag & Bone Moto Boots II; Low Luv x Erin Wasson Arrow & Leather Bracelet}

I used to love cross-stitching on family road trips; life got in the way, and I put the hobby aside, but seeing this DIY Iphone cross-stitched case, I’m thinking of trying again!  How sweet does this case look?

This DIY chalkboard platter is FABULOUS. I love chalkboard paint; really, love all chalkboard, and any excuse to serve cheese is my kind of excuse.  This chalkboard serving platter is no exception.

I’m totally geeking out over the upcoming release of the book-turned film version of The Great Gatsby.  I was one of three in my high school English class who actually liked reading The Great Gatsby – scratch that – I was one of three who actually read the assigned reading.  And if I wasn’t excited enough over a classic book-turned-movie, the likes of Carey Mulligan, Leonardo DiCaprio,Tobey Maguire and Gemma Ward playing the main characters, and all of the stunning 1920s costumes, the announcement that Tiffany & Co. supplied all of the jewelry showcased in the upcoming film has me giddy.  Like I said, geeking out.

And finally, in case we miss each other in the worldwide blogosphere on Saturday, Happy Almost-New-Year!  Here’s to a perfect 2012.  {Image here.}

DIY Crystal Nails

I’m obsessed with decking out my nails.  I think nail polish is such an inexpensive pop of fashion, and the more that polish and manicures become popular, the more fabulous options the stores stock.  Two painted thumbs up!  Which brings me to this week’s home-done manicure.  Every year I scour the stores for that perfect sparkly dress for New Year’s Eve, and every year I throw my hands up and roll up to the party in a black dress, black tights, loud shoes … lexi-style.  So the manicure is my big “statement.”  Also, if you follow this little blog of mine, you’ll know that in addition to my penchant for tights, and varying shades of black, I fancy myself a rapper.  “Every time I come around this ____ (fill in the blank … this weekend = raging house party), bling bling.”  Yep, so so good at this rapping thing.

Right, the nails – I blinged them out!

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Base Coat/Top Coat – Sally Hansen Advanced Hard As Nails
  • Color Polish – Sally Hansen Xtreme Wear Nail Color in Red Carpet
  • Flat-back Crystals – Jolee’s Jewels Crystallized Swarovski Elements
  • Q-tips
  • Lotion

I like to set myself up first – I place a pile of crystals, crystal side up on the table, and I dip my q-tip into a small amount of lotion.  Crazy as it sounds, the q-tip and lotion trick will save you every time you work with small crystals or rhinestones.  Basically your q-tip (with lotion), when touched to the top of a crystal, gently adheres to the stone, making it oh-so-easy to place the crystal onto your nail.

You can use nail adhesive or glue to place the stones, but I just painted a thick coat of clear topcoat, and placed my stones one by one.  I tried lining up the stones on my nail, but ran out of space (tiny nails), and the nails where I simply scattered stones looked best.

Once I had arranged the stones where I wanted them on the nails, I waited patently (probably a whopping three minutes), for the nails to dry, and then painted a generous coat of clear polish over the nails to seal the stones.

I absolutely love the results!  And just to make the whole project a tad more affordable, next time I would probably just use small rhinestones – but you know, I had to bling it out for New Year’s.

The best part about this glitzy at-home manicure is that I can’t stop oohing and aahing over my nails.  Fancy.  Fun Fact: having your nails bedazzled makes everything you do look fancy. I shaved my legs all fancy last night, my typing = fancy, cereal pouring – fancy with a side of Special K.

Here I am fancily tweeting.  Enjoy!  (And send pictures of your own blingy mani!)

Designer Coffee Sleeves

In elementary school there was this enormous (or what seemed enormous at the time) trash compactor in the cafeteria that we had to dump our garbage into.  At the end of each lunch, a child inevitably tossed his or her lunch money, medication, or worse (and far more costly) – their retainer – and the compactor had to be shut down.  Moms and Dads had to come by the school to help sort through the trash, searching for the $3,000 mouth guard.  I threw caution to the wind and often lost my whole lunchbox (seriously – giant trash chomping machine here, people); eventually my mom got wise and she learned to brown-paper-bag-it.

Fast forward many many years, and a handful of my favorite luxury designers are creating couture substitutes for the coffee sleeve.  Take that, Starbucks!  I don’t care how much I spent (in my imaginary world where I buy things like couture coffee sleeves), I’d toss that sleeve right into the trash – cup, crocodile, and all.  Operator fail or fashion fail?  You tell me.

Shoes I’d Love to Love

But seriously, I love them already.

UPDATE: Thanks to Pinterest, I just learned that the shoes were featured in the DW by Kanye West runway show at Paris Fashion Week, and are likely a part of the new brand (fingers crossed that the hit store shelves!)  The shoes are designed by Giuseppe Zanotti for DW by Kanye West Spring 2012.

The Long + Short of It: Hair
December 27, 2011, 10:27 am
Filed under: Hair, Thoughts On Grown-Upness | Tags: , , ,

My hair is an endless battle, and I suppose it’s like that for every woman. I have curly/wavy hair, which means I’m predisposed to desperately want straight hair.  My sister has the thickest, straightest hair – and she dreams in curls.  I call it the grass-is-always-greener effect.  I’ll go to great lengths to blow dry, iron, and chemically alter my hair to achieve “different” (in my case – stick straight), but one thing is for sure, I refuse to cut my hair.

I cut my hair twice (and when I say cut, I mean “more than a trim”) – once in my early teens, unaware of the power of the blow drier at this point, and once in late high school, because I had more guts back then.  Both times I donated the several inches of hair lost.  Today I argue with hairdressers to take no more than an inch, and even after the onslaught of scissors, and a scant pile of hair ends on the ground, I snivel all the way home. #DramaQueen

I’m never happy with a hair cut.  I always convince myself that it looked better before – with that extra brittle inch.  What’s wrong with me?

Are you crazy protective with your hair, or is it just me?

Shoe Love: Kourtney Kardashian

Kourtney Kardashian sure knows how to pick boots.  And one pair of  flat over-the-knee boots in particular have really won me over, and wouldn’t you know it – they’re totally affordable!  One of Kourtney’s favorite pairs: Chinese Laundry Nevada boots (sadly, sold out).
